What is a height gauge?
A height gauge could be described as a vernier caliper fixed to a
firm base. In contrast to the vernier scale, a column having a fixed
scale is mounted so that the axis of the anvil up and down the fixed
scale allows vertical distances to be measured accurately. Usually a
height gauge is mounted on a surface plate for measurement of
vertical distances.
